LOFA’s marketing manager Gina Hinde, who organised her first SOLEX exhibition, has said she has been extremely pleased with the response from exhibitors and visitors to the show.

Here Gina reveals what it has been like to organise her first SOLEX.

How did you find your first SOLEX show as organiser?
It was great, I had a great time meeting everyone and getting my bearings, but it was also a huge learning curve and I learned a lot. Now I have the first one under my belt it gives me more of an idea of how I can improve on future shows.

Were you happy with how the three-day exhibition went?
I was very happy, everyone was really kind and positive about the event and despite one or two hiccups it all went smoothly.

Did you get lots of positive feedback from exhibitors and visitors?
I did get some very positive and constructive feedback from both exhibitors and visitors which I will now act upon to make SOLEX 2020 bigger and better.

Were you happy with the quality and numbers of visitors attending the show?

I was very happy with the quality of visitors and the visitor numbers – they were slightly up on last year so that made me smile.

What are the dates of next year’s show?

Next year’s show is from 7-9th July.

When do you start planning for the 2020 exhibition?
I have already started!

Was Solex 2019 the tipping point from weave to modern contemporary garden furniture?

We gained reaction to SOLEX from both exhibitors and suppliers. Find out what they had to say after another memorable three-day show...

Mark Osborne, Chairman of LOFA, said: “The big comment has been the amount of newness here this year, genuine innovation, genuine trends that people have acted on, and then brought new and innovative products to the marketplace.”

So, we asked exhibitors and buyers. is this the tipping point from weave to contemporary garden lounge furniture?

Richard Searle, Kettler, who were showing the Jati & Gabon, top end contemporary garden lounge furniture and already have one stockist who is doing well over half a million with it, said: “I think weave is still growing. Where a lot of the traditional dining has died away, the market has opened up for more contemporary aluminium furniture.”

At Hartman, Paul Facey said: “There’s obviously a bigger representation of modern contemporary furniture than has been in the past but there is still this dilemma from weave still dominating sales at the moment. It will probably be flattening out now rather than growing. I would say that it’s not the tipping point this year but it could well be next year.”

Jodie Grimmer at LeisureGrow added: “It’s refreshing to see less weave, but weave is still a good 85 percent of sales on the shop floor. It’s a balance between putting over something which looks nice, whether it’s a rope set, a big aluminium deep-seated lounge set. It’s still got to justify that shop floor space. I think that’s the nervousness. But it’s coming.”

Hugo Douglas Pennant and Martin Bell, the directors of Bramblecrest, said: “There is definitely a shift towards aluminium, but calling it a tipping point is too much. There is plenty of mileage left in weave furniture. Five years ago we sold a lot more dining sets compared to sofa sets. Now the dining sets are definitely on the decline with a trend towards sofa sets, although wealthy customers may have both.”

However at Norfolk Leisure, Debbie Waudby said: “I would say 100 percent for Norfolk, it’s contemporary aluminium.  With our aluminium it’s the design, the practicality, the brand.”

On the garden centre side, Justin Williams of Fron Goch, told GTN: “That is the million dollar question! We might say it’s when not if. We can see contemporary style taking hold throughout Europe, but we know from our recent politics we dare not use Europe as a guide!

“Customer’s love new and will always be attracted to it but for our customers it must deliver comfort and practicality and it will need to fit in with their property and building materials. In today’s climate customers will price-check and compare value for money too.

“For us I think this will be a slower transition, even with all the new products at Solex I suspect 70-8 percent of sales nationally may still be through weave in the coming year.  New products drive our industry, so hopefully I am wrong. I often am!”

Tammy Woodhouse of Millbrook Garden Centre said: “It was great to see some more variety from the brown weave but I’m not sure we have quite reached tipping point yet.”

Edward Boult, of Grovewell Garden Centres, commented: "We are based in a somewhat traditional area and I'm not convinced the change to contemporary will be that quick down here in Kent so the core of our displays will be predominantly weave. But we are looking at showing a few more modern aluminium frame sets, partly to see and test the response, and also, as we think it will freshen up our shop floors with a slightly different look. We do have concerns that everything is very grey at present and are also trying to combat that with our range selection."

David Yardley, Chief Executive of Klondyke Garden Centres, said: "SOLEX is a good show that gives you the time to focus on the range just at the right time of year. There was lots of interesting product and with a combination of supplier visits and SOLEX our buyer has selected the range for next year. It's not quite at the tipping point for us but there will be some contemporary non-weave product in the range for next year although weave will still feature prominently."

Matthew Bent told us: "Wwave has been the mainstay for the last x number of years and still appeals to both the traditional and contemporary customer. It seems to fit in what ever the style. The new contemporary styes are great but only appeal to certain people who can fit that look into their garden. So there could well be a shift for some away from weave but I think it will still be the dominant material for garden furniture for the time being."

And our final word on Solex 2019 goes to Alan Roper, of Blue Diamond, who have just bought another six centres from Wyevale: “I have never seen such an eclectic mix of furniture. Everyone is predicting the demise of weave but no one really knows the direction of travel that future garden furniture will take. I don’t believe that any one type of furniture will dominate as it has before, plastic, wood, weave etc. The modern metal look will grow over time but I’m not sure it will completely dominate. Variety will be the watch-word.”

“Our big BBQ team winner is no stranger to The Greatest Awards, the double award-winning team at Altons are winners again.”

Presenting the awards at a drinks reception, kindly provided by sponsors SOLEX, GTN's MD Trevor Pfeiffer said: "Across the groups we decided the winner should be Blue Diamond who have seen like-for-like sales increase by over 25% this year.

“For big centres we have two winners, Scotsdales and Whitehall Lacock, whose displays really impressed our team of experts.

“We visited lots of small centres doing a great job of selling garden furniture this year but one stood out a mile – it may have been the purple carpet – but the results speak for themselves with sales sometimes beating sales at the main Baytree garden centre, our small centre winners are Baytree of Hilgay.”

NEW for 2020 all Grillstream BBQs now come with LeisureGrow’s revolutionary HYBRID SYSTEM. The new system lets users decide whether to cook on gas or charcoal each time they cook by simply lifting the grills and either adding or taking away charcoal from the BBQ.

Now cooking on a Grillstream with charcoal is just as easy as cooking on gas by using the burners to light the charcoal and then turning them off for that traditional charcoal BBQ taste.

Jody Grimmer, managing director for LeisureGrow Products said; “We think our new Hybrid Grillstream system is just what the BBQ trade and consumer has been waiting for.  Now you don’t have to choose between the convenience of gas or the nostalgia and taste of charcoal – consumers can decide each time how to cook their BBQ depending on how much time they have and what they’re cooking.  We’re really excited to be sharing this at SOLEX.”

To support the New Hybrid System for Grillstream, the LeisureGrow team has made investments in some great POS and marketing tools for Grillstream including videos, shop-in-shop retail solutions, and packaging which is also on display at SOLEX.  And if that’s not enough to whet visitors’ appetites, BBQ aficionado Dr Sweetsmoke will be on the Grillstream stand at the show, cooking up some tasty nibbles and dishing out BBQ tips to customers.

Pacific Lifestyle cover all areas at Solex

Pacific Lifestyle’s Nigel Lawrence took time out from taking orders on Thursday morning to take the Solex Sun through the highlights of their ranges for 2020...

Pacific Lifestyle’s Nigel Lawrence took time out from taking orders on Thursday morning to take the Solex Sun through the highlights of their ranges for 2020.

We started with their extensive range of garden furniture covers, Aerocover.  It is a dutch brand that is sold in 40 countries with 100 plus size options.  The fabric is solution dyed, rip proof and breathable with a 5 year guarantee.  “That’s why the return rate is only 0.2%, explained Nigel.  “Aerocover is one range to suit all products and the display comes with a consumer video which makes it an ideal choice for retailers.”

Pacific have extended their range of Platinum Brand 2 tilt system parasols, with built in LED challenger glow rechargeable lighting, available in 3m square, 3.5m round and 4m x 3m rectangular sizes. “A key feature of our parasols is the rectangular ribs and they are very popular when sold with our granite bases,” said Nigel.

Their Cosi gas fire pits are a range that will light up any garden centre out doorliving depart ment.  They are contemporary styles and range in size from floor standing 69cm Cosicubes to portable Cosisoops which can be kept on a table in the garden or taken on trips away from home.  Nigel said: “A key feature of all Cosi fire pits is that the gas bottle is hidden on all models.”

Pacific Lifestyle are at the forefront of the increase in shade sail sales with their range of Nesling sails along with all the fittings needed to make them a feature of any garden.  “The lack of specific fittings such as turnbuckles and anchor eyebolts has meant the adoption of sail shade in the UK has lagged behind the rest of Europe.  This complete range solves that problems and we now expect sales to soar.”

Providing a point of difference in contemporary modern garden furniture, Pacific Lifestyle’s new Honolulu range from Vietnam features FSC acacia wood and twisted polystring wich has the look and feel of string but the strength of rope.  “We’ve had great interest in our new ranges but also continued strength in orders for traditional weave sofa and dining sets.  Our dining sets are particularly popular because of the gas pump adjustable table system which makes raising and lowering of the table such a delight for customers.”

Hartman encourage younger people to invest in garden furniture

TV Gardening Celebrity David Domoney was on the Hartman stand at SOLEX where he said; "if we are focusing to try and encourage younger people with stylish designs to invest in garden furniture and invest time in their own garden that's got to be good for the industry..."

TV Gardening Celebrity David Domoney was on the Hartman stand at SOLEX where he said; "if we are focusing to try and encourage younger people with stylish designs to invest in garden furniture and invest time in their own garden that's got to be good for the industry..."

Commenting on the new trends at Solex he said "One of the biggest things is trying to make garden furniture become as much a feature rather than just a functional table and chairs. With the innovation within porcelain surfaces for tables, the ability to be able to add a pattern over the surface gives a more natural effect which enables you to pick up some of the pigments or the colour in the surface of the table with that of the graphite around the outside of the of the chairs as well and it's giving much more of a chic look."

Aluminum lounge style furniture is also a growing part of Solex this year.  Hartman Marketing Manager, Michelle Bradford added: "Looking around the show at aluminum it has become quite apparent that times are changing and we've adapted our range quite a bit this year it's quite a way forward for Hartman and the aluminum range we had it with Titan last year but we've developed three different ranges that incorporate aluminum and the ceramic glass that we just talking about goes across both weave and aluminum so you can have that contemporary look with traditional weave but we've also put it on that aluminum to give that ultra modern look and feel."

Hartman acknowledge that a decline in sales of weave going forwards may be due to the plastics issue but feel there is still a big traditional part of the market that will be looking for new colours such as Ash in their Heritage range.

David, who loves the lightness of the aluminum ranges making it more flexible for peoples needs went on to say: "The one thing that always gets me about this particular show is the level of innovation. You would naturally assume that one particular product group cannot continue to evolve. But because of the way that technology is moving to create more diversity in manufacturing is enabling new and exciting things to come about and if we are focusing in to try and encourage younger people with stylish designs to invest in garden furniture and invest time in their own garden that's got to be good for the industry."

Outback launch charcoal cooking on gas

Outback launched their Hybrid BBQ solution with models that feature charcoal cooking, lit by the gas burners, alongside traditional gas BBQ burners...

Outback launched their Hybrid BBQ solution with models that feature charcoal cooking, lit by the gas burners, alongside traditional gas BBQ burners.

MD Mark Osborne told Solex Sun this morning. "New for 2020 every model of Ranger Magnum, which are our three burner, Jupiter which is our four burner and then Signature which is our six burner will come with a charcoal basket.

"We're working with a UK production company who manufacture very dense charcoal briquettes so you can light this briquette with gas underneath the charcoal baskets, get it to a stage where it's just beginning to burn then turn off the gas and it will continue burning and you can cook on it as charcoal."

"We ran a consumer show two weeks ago down at Longleat a few weeks ago showcasing the models and getting some consumer feedback on what we were looking to launch for next year. When you show people charcoal to cook on a gas barbecue it is just what they want. Everybody loves the convenience of gas but what they also want is the charcoal flavour."

Also new for 2020 the Signature range comes ready assembled on a pallet and along with the charcoal basket it also boasts extra drawers and storage, acacia wood chopping board (passed for contact with food) plus a pull out tray for the patio gas botttle.

Layout collection – is a modular deep seating system which brings elegant indoor lounging to outdoor spaces. The collection is comprised of two upholstered seat sizes and seven tables which together create intimate or grand seating environments. Create and configure an individual system that perfectly fits your own outdoor living, as you wish. Upholstered backs and arms are separate components, using the best Sunbrella® Rain® waterproof fabrics that the outdoor industry has to offer. These can be attached on any side of the seats to create sofas, corner sectional, loungers, chairs, and many asymmetrical configurations. Refined frames support both the upholstered seats and a choice of teak or terrazzo table tops. Layout is a creative kit of parts to build your perfect outdoor living room. (designers: Nathalie de Leval and Andrew Jones)

Woodland Screen collection – is a companion design to the Layout Collection and can be used to create greater intimacy and enclosure for seating configurations. The light, random pattern of the teak slats, their soft edges and the pebble-like feet were inspired by nature and create an atmosphere of quiet sophistication. Available in two size: Landscape – h. 133cm x w. 228cm and Portrait – h. 178cm x w. 122cm. (designers: Nathalie de Leval and Andrew Jones)

Katie Blake Garden Furniture continues exciting growth

For next season Glencrest Seatex are introducing two new ranges – a stylish Aluminium Range and a Luxurious Rattan Range branded ‘Katie Blake Elite’...

Katie Blake Garden Furniture is becoming one of the bestselling brands throughout the United Kingdom.

With its great reputation achieved by innovation in design and excellent service, retailers stocking Katie Blake are reporting growth, profit and, most important, happy customers!

Katie Blake operates on a strict pricing strategy across its stockists in garden retail, high street and online - discounting is not allowed! It has always been Glencrest’s policy to protect their customers, something that other brands don’t appear to value. We are able to offer superior product at such competitive prices purely on the basis that we own our manufacturing operation.

In 2019, CEO and founder Jack Whiteley reported a turnover increment of nearly 40% on the previous year. With customer retention being so high and sales continuing to increase, we are confident that the product is right.

For next season we are introducing two new ranges – a stylish Aluminium Range and a Luxurious Rattan Range branded ‘Katie Blake Elite’. Contrary to many opinions about the popularity of Rattan, sales of Katie Blake would suggest that it is still a firm favourite of the British public.

The new Elite range provides a high level of comfort with stylish design features and can come with Sunbrella cushions that can be left outdoors permanently. For outdoor use Sunbrella Fabric is far superior to other fabrics, which makes this range unique and long lasting.

Katie Blake now adopts Solution Dyeing and is achieving level 7/8 Light to Fast tests! This fabric is guaranteed not to fade for 2 years. Every set of furniture comes complete with a waterproof cover included as standard. The Katie Blake Elite Range also boasts the same 10-year guarantee, covering the frames and the Rattan weave.

The best of last week's garden retailing news

If you missed all the garden retailing sector news while you were at Solex, here's a link to last week's GTN Xtra...

Char-Broil showcased its BBQ range for all sizes of outdoor spaces

America’s leading gas grill brand Char-Broil showcased its flexible range of BBQ grills that suit any outdoor space from large to small.

America’s leading gas grill brand Char-Broil showcased its flexible range of BBQ grills that suit any outdoor space from large to small.

All products combine cutting-edge innovation, top performance and clever design.  Stars of the show include the All-Star portable BBQ, available in gas or electric models; a Gas2Coal hybrid BBQ with 4 burners; and a Professional ‘Double Header’ enabling fish, meat or vegetables to be grilled completely separately.

With Char-Broil, innovation is at the heart of everything. Char-Broil brought one of the first charcoal grills to market in 1948. In the years since, it has been delivering innovation continuously.  Infrared is one of the most well-known of Char-Broil’s unique technologies, because it has helped revolutionise BBQ cooking by giving up to 50% juicier results, and a perfectly even distribution of heat without any flare-ups. The All-Star and Professional ranges feature this innovative TRU-InfraredTM cooking technology.

For those who only have a balcony or small garden but want the performance of a premium grill, the Char-Broil All-Star BBQ is the ultimate versatile and portable solution. Available in either gas or electric models, it can either be placed in its stand - with foldable side shelves for extra workspace - or it can be detached from the stand to place on a table-top. Cast iron grill grates make it durable, rust resistant and easy to clean, and the All-Star delivers the trademark Char-Broil TRU-Infrared cooking performance using indirect infrared heat to evenly cook producing 50% juicier results every time.

As well as delivering a superior cooking performance on the 1,600 cm2 cooking area, the All-Star offers distinctive, premium design and durability. It has a cast-aluminium lid with a lid-mounted temperature gauge and a porcelain enamelled firebox to deliver a perfect, controlled BBQ experience. The grill can be separated from its cart by opening the two lockers on each side; the pocket handles facilitate transport of the grill.

The All-Star also has an innovative GearTrax accessory that turns it from a low-level portable BBQ to full height wheeled cart, making it easy to manoeuvre.

Another innovation at the Show will be the Char-Broil Gas2Coal.  Why choose between gas or charcoal when there is a grill that can do both? And can even do both at the same time, with the two separate charcoal trays.  The new Char-Broil Gas2Coal 440 converts from gas to charcoal in less than 60 seconds and without requiring any tools. Available in black painted steel, the Gas2Coal has 4 stainless steel burners and Surefire ignition so that you’re ready to cook at the touch of a button.

Over the last three years LOFA have been working with FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) and HTS (Hertfordshire Trading Standards) on an initiative to ensure that all cushions sold by LOFA members comply with Trading Standards and the Governments Fire Safety Regulations.

Lofa have been working with HTS, who are our primary authority partner, to enable our members to comply with all the most relevant and up to date Fire Safety Regulations. As an association we feel that taking this route will not only help our members but also safeguard retailers and consumers.

After 3 years, and an investment of over £600k , all our members offering cushions and cushioned furniture are now 100% compliant and have earned LOFAssured Accreditation. These members have been put through an audit of certification, documentation and traceability to ensure only safe, compliant products are offered to the market place. The rigorous process included product testing by an independent test house. LOFA also tested a number of garden cushions from non-lofa members, that were brought from a variety of retailers both online and high street and 8 out of 10 of these cushions failed the legal requirements resulting in products being withdrawn from sale.

LOFA will be pushing this message out to consumers and retailers alike via a big marketing campaign across press, online, TV and Radio, we also want to push this message out in stores to tie up with this campaign.
