Fantastic looking exhibitor stands attracted high volumes of visitors to the first day of SOLEX at the NEC with organiser Phil Gibbs admitting that Hall 5 was buzzing with activity. Phil said: "We've had a great start to the show."

Tepro wins Best New Product Award at SOLEX
Tepro picked up the Best New Product Award for its 'clean and sleek' barbecue.


Tepro picked up the Best New Product Award for its 'clean and sleek' barbecue.

The judges - Eric Hopper, Iain Wylie, Lynn Jones and Pippa Gibbs - were impressed with the design of the Tepro barbecue.

"This barbecue is clean looking, modern and sleek," said the judges.

James Jagged, of Tepro, said: "It's great for a product with such great design and manufacture to be recognised by the industry."

The Best New Product Award was presented by Mark Osborne, chairman of LOFA.

Second was Alexander Rose and third LeisureBench.

Alton, Chessington and Shackletons Garden Centres all won Gold Awards in GTN's Greatest Outdoor Leisure Sales Team Awards, presented this evening at SOLEX 2017.  Bramblecrest won the Gold Award for Outdoor Leisure Supplier of the Year as voted for by garden centres visited by GTN's team of experts over the past four months.



Alton, Chessington and Shackletons Garden Centres all won Gold Awards in GTN's Greatest Outdoor Leisure Sales Team Awards, presented this evening at SOLEX 2017.  Bramblecrest won the Gold Award for Outdoor Leisure Supplier of the Year as voted for by garden centres visited by GTN's team of experts over the past four months.

The judges were particularly impressed with the Everdure by Heston Blumenthal aspect on the Kettler stand.

Richard Searle, of Kettler, said: "We're really thrilled to have received this award. A lot of effort went into designing and building the stand, and to be recognised in this way is marvellous.

The Tramontina stand was judged the second best, and Campingaz came third.

LOFA announces “LOFAssured” initiative to ensure all cushions sold by members comply with Trading Standard’s and FIRA’s fire safety regulations...



LOFA announces “LOFAssured” initiative to ensure all cushions sold by members comply with Trading Standard’s and FIRA’s fire safety regulations...

 

SOLEX, the UK’s most prominent trade show for garden furniture and barbeques, sees LOFA (Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association) focusing on raising awareness of fire safety standards/regulations for garden cushions in a new campaign – LOFAssured.

 

This new LOFAssured initiative was launched at SOLEX at the NEC in Birmingham. One of the conditions of LOFA membership is that members must adhere to a code of conduct, part of which is compliance with all current legislation; it is this culture of propriety that the retailer and customer buy into when they source product from LOFA members.

 

LOFA has appointed FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) and entered into a Primary Authority Partnership with Hertfordshire Trading Standards to aid the members in their quest for full compliance.

 

It is a condition of membership that all LOFA members are fully compliant and authorised to display the new LOFAssured logo. The message “look for LOFAssured products and buy from a LOFA member. Take comfort in being fully covered by the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 and 1993”  will be promoted to retailers and consumers from January 2018 and throughout the 2018 season and beyond.

 

LOFAssured will prove a distinguishing factor setting LOFA products apart from other non-compliant suplliers.

SOLEX is hosting an information stand attended by representatives from FIRA and Hertfordshire Trading Standards officers. 

Members and buyers can check out the full compliance regulations so that, throughout the supply chain, all are fully informed about the issue and the benefits of purchasing products from LOFA members.

 

That is the job of LOFA as the industry’s trade association – to protect members and their customers.

Landmann takes up smoking as 'niche' market shows strong growth


Following signs that UK consumers are increasingly keen on smoked foods, barbecue suppliers Lndmann have included new Tennessee smokers in their line-up for next season...

"We're pushing smokers next year," said MD Martin Carnaby (pictured on the cover page with the new Tennessee 300 model. "Smokers are massive in the US and Germany but still quite niche in Britain. However we've seen good growth here and think there is potential to go further."

The range chimes well with Landmann's new marketing strategy targeting mid- and up-market consumers with prtemium quality products. "This has gone down extremely well with our garden centres," said Martin, "who are happy to have a quality brand offering outstanding value alongside the existing brand they stock."

Landmann's appopints only stockists who demonstrate a commitment to customer service and projection of the best image in-store. A new retail concept incluiding lifestyle messages and imagery will be rolled out next season to help stockists to create a premium ambience.

Michelin starred chef Blumenthal has collaborated with top Australian barbeque manufacturer Shriro to launch the range, which was successfully piloted in Australia at the end of last year.

The range was jointly tested and developed at Heston Blumenthal’s famous development kitchen in Bray and Shriro’s research facilities. “I wanted to bring some of the techniques and methods I have developed in over 20 years in the kitchen and bring them to the great outdoors,” said Heston.

By combining the latest technology and design aesthetics, with ease of use and thoughtful attention to detail, he created a barbeque collection that has been designed from the ground up and promises to change how people think about barbequed food.



The charcoal range sets out to improve on the entire cooking experience from the point of ignition. The unique Fast Flame Ignition System in the HUB and FUSION charcoal barbeques use a clever fusion of electricity with an integrated heating element to ignite the charcoal so it is ready to cook on in 10 minutes, without the need for firelighters or additives. Additional stand out features include Rotiscope Technology, a unique integrated rotisserie system; Cliplock Forks and a retractable power cord, all in a sharp, contemporary design.

The charcoal range also includes the CUBE, a compact and versatile portable charcoal barbeque(complete with integrated food grade storage area and preparation board) constructed from lightweight and durable aluminium, with cool-to-touch handles and a range of colour options.

The gas range includes the three burner FURNACEM, and the two burner FORCE models, both with high performance burners.

A new safety feature has been introduced on all its Pro-Series range. Wood pellet barbecuing - where wood pellets are automatically fed into the fire by an auger driven by an electric motor - has not yet taken off in Britain although it is huge in the United States - probably because few consumers here are familiar with the concept of plugging your barbecue into the mains, having been raised on charcoal and gas.

The mighty Timberline 850 barbecue from Traeger (pictured) is a serious piece of al fresco wood pellet-fuelled kit with a price tag to match - SRP £1,849 – but  Al Fresco Chef's sales manager Jordan Lee says prices could drop as the concept catches on. Fuel prices are broadly similar to charcoal, with a £17.99 bag of hardwood pellets giving about 20 hours of cooking.

After a prototype version sold out shortly after its launch last year, leading UK suppliers Outback International will unveil their new Bar-Grill barbecue at this year's SOLEX.

 

The latest addition to the company's portfolio will feature at this year's outdoor living showcase when the barbecue and bar combination will be the centrepiece on the Outback stand 320 in Hall 5.

“We were very pleased with the positive reception online, garden centre and specialist trade buyers gave to our barbecue-bar innovation at last year’s Solex show, and we see the new Bar-Grill as a leading top-of-the-range attraction for the 2018 season.

“We are confident that this stand-alone barbecue-bar concept will appeal to al fresco enthusiasts who enjoy cooking while at the same time having a drink and chat with guests”, said Outback chief executive Mark Osborne.

The Bar-Grill’s barbecue section is in high grade stainless steel, and features four grills, roasting hood, warming rack, extra rear infrared burner and heat gauge, with ample draw space and storage for a 13kg gas cylinder. The bar top is in Italian marble and can be located either side of the barbecue, while assembly is based on an easy wing nut system.



Delivered to a level ground site on its own pallet, the Bar-Grill has a retail price tag of about £2,500.
