The Ever Given container ship which ran aground and blocked the Suez Canal for six days in March this year has just been allowed to continue on its journey after a financial settlement agreement.
The ship is loaded with about 18,300 containers, some of which have products destined for LOFA members in the UK, has just reached the Port of Said where it will undergo a dive inspection of its hull before sailing to its next port to discharge its cargo.
No details of the financial settlement between the ships owners and the Suez Canal Authority have been revealed. The initial amount asked for by the SCA was $900 million for the salvage operation.
The incident has caused a delay of 106 days for the containers on board and held up more than 180 other ships while the Canal was blocked.

Outdoor garden furniture, wooden products and decorative garden structure specialist, Zest 4 Leisure has recruited both in the UK and in Eastern Europe to ensure a robust supply chain going forward.
Having like everyone in the industry seen the potential challenges of the combined fall out of the pandemic and BREXIT on worldwide logistics, the company has recruited additional personnel throughout the supply chain and introduced new systems throughout its production and supply process.
An initial four staff have been recruited in key roles in Europe and the UK with further appointments planned as Zest ramps up its commitment to supply sustainably. A new warehouse management system has also been installed as part of a digital implementation across the board. Further developments are ongoing as the company sees significantly increased demand for products such as the Chepstow Arbour and the Burghley Arbour, consistent with consumer trends towards spending more time in the garden.
Zest 4 Leisure’s managing director, Steve Morgan commented, “All suppliers and manufacturers have faced a unique situation over the last fifteen months with massively increased demand - creating practical supply challenges never witnessed before. Zest 4 Leisure has taken the opportunity to review its supply methodology with a view to making it both robust and future-proof.”

The Glowbus® Dewdrop is a handmade fire sculpture, made in Belgium by the artist, and founder Andreas Ketels.
The Glowbus® takes an evening around a crackling fire into a completely different dimension.
Glowbus® had no interest in creating a fire it that will rust through and fall apart so they only use durable and sustainable Corten Steel which ensures a life span eight times longer than ordinary steel.
Corten steel owes is durability to its high-density oxide skin (rust layer). It shuts off the steel from the outside air and forms a durable and protective layer between the steel and the natural elements.
The Glowbus®Dewdrop is designed for all kinds of weather, temperatures from -1000˚ to 1000˚ are no issue at all and thanks to its robust shape and weight, it can perfectly withstand winds up to 200km/h.
For each purchase of a Dewdrop, Glowbus® donate to a nature conservation trust which results in 25 trees being planted. So far they have planted 6.7 hectares, that’s 12.5 football pitches in old money.

Panama goes grey
With grey having been selected as Pantone’s colour of the year two years in a row, the nation’s homes have continued to enjoy the versatility of this colour which often provides a backdrop to colour splashes which allow individuality to shine through. As such, the popularity of grey within our homes and gardens looks set to continue long into the year ahead, with the neutral tone shaping LifestyleGarden®’s new offering with its 2022 Panama range.
This year, LifestyleGarden®’s Panama collection, which is praised for its ultimate low maintenance and elegant design, will be made available in all-new grey designs as well as the existing black styles. The expansion into new colour options will provide consumers with more choice, and also retailers with more sales opportunities as they can also maximise sales by cross merchandising with soft furnishing and accessories to create different looks within the retail environment. This ability to showcase different looks will expand the reach of Panama’s popularity.
The 2022 Panama offering will feature a range of seating options, including high-backed and padded chair design. The stackable slatted design also brings LifestyleGarden®’s award-winning DuraOcean® technology to more ranges, with each of these chairs using 3.5kgs of recycled marine plastic waste such as nets and rope. Additional options within the range includes four, six and eight-seater dining sets, the latter two also coming complete with two recliner chairs.
Completing the collection are a number of unique sofa designs which can be comfortably enjoyed with or without the deep-filled and highly durable ‘Olefin’ cushions, making it a true year-round solution.
Rigorously tested for complete performance assurance, the Panama range is made from weatherproof, lightweight and sustainable aluminium, and requires little to no assembly or ongoing maintenance. The full range is also complemented by LifestyleGarden®’s unique new finishing technology which gives the illusion of wood accents on the chair arms and tabletops. In fact, the effect is so convincing that LifestyleGarden® has created special ‘We can’t believe it isn’t wood!’ merchandising signage to showcase this unique material innovation within the retail environment.
Solana gets a makeover
Solana is a proper war horse of a furniture range. The straightforward sophistication and no maintenance design make this collection a great entry level option and is the perfect outdoor dining set for those that want something to last for years to come.
This year, Solana is set to enjoy a makeover, with a new, fresher “Weathernet” fabric in grey Birch, and a new paint finish which benefits from increased scratch resistance and a contemporary matte finish. Finally, the introduction of DuraBoard® - LifestyleGarden®’s iconic tabletop innovation, which is durable, highly UV-resistant and has a unique surface finish – will add a more defined pattern and contemporary look to all Solana tables.

Multi award winning company RotoSpa are recognized as the UK’s ONLY spa manufacturer. A family run business with over 18 year’s experience, RotoSpa has become the name synonymous with reliability, durability and portability.
‘Holidaying at Home’ is now one of the largest trends within the UK. Retailers had experienced increased inflatable spa sales during 2017 and 2018, creating an educated consumer looking to take the next step in spa ownership and investing in hard shell hot tub. In 2020 Rotospa experienced a 600% increase in demand as more Britons were spending time in their garden and hot tubs were referred to as being like a family dining room table. Our gardens have never been more of a wellbeing essential than it is today.
This year RotoSpa were proud to be recognised as a leading UK manufacture on ITV4 ‘Made in Britain’. We were given the opportunity to show the consumer how our unique Rotationally Moulded spas are built in our Birmingham factory.
Today you can to join RotoSpa in the evolution in outdoor living and you can earn at least £1800 per month, with no financial investment required! You supply the floor space in your business premises and we supply the spa, display and much more. The spa will sell itself & we will do the rest including delivery, installation & after care all taken care of by us. RotoSpa retailers sell 4 spas on average per month and you will earn a minimum of £450 per spa sold.
Your high footfall premises & demographic, combined with our fantastic product & package, will result in sales.
In place of the in-person SOLEX exhibition, we are hosting an online version using our SOLEX website and social media platforms. Showcasing everything that is new from our LOFA members as well as working with Garden Trade News online and in print to bring you three days of new products and ideas for Spring Summer Season 2022...
In March we made the difficult decision to cancel Solex for the second year in a row. Every year we look forward to connecting with exhibitors, buyers and industry professionals and although there are positive signs that events are starting up again, we felt that the restrictions would compound the challenges faced in organising this event and unlike other exhibitions we are unable to move the SOLEX Show to a later date in the year because of the long lead times required for orders.
We wanted to make the right decision for everyone involved and we did not want to continue with a show that would not be up to our customary high standards. So, we decided not to run SOLEX in 2021 but move the exhibition to July 2022, when we can come back bigger, better and, hopefully, Covid free!
We know that this will come as an enormous disappointment to many so, in place of the in-person SOLEX exhibition, we are hosting an online version using our SOLEX website and social media platforms. We will be showcasing everything that is new from our LOFA members as well as working with Garden Trade News online and in print to bring you three days of new products and ideas for Spring Summer Season 2022.
This year LOFA also teamed up with Planet Mark, a company that cares about the planet and wants to help businesses action and power change. Its certification recognises continuous improvement, encourages action and helps build an empowered community of like-minded individuals to make a whole world of difference. By measuring and reducing our carbon footprint with Planet Mark we can directly and measurably contribute to up to nine Sustainable Development Goals and address 25 SDG targets. I am pleased to announce that LOFA has achieved its Planet Mark certification for 2021.
As we are slowly coming out of lockdown and back to some kind of remembered normality, we are already looking forward to hosting everyone back at Solex in July 2022. We will be sharing the NEC with the Commonwealth Games in 2022 so we will be moving to Halls 17/18/19 for the first time which will give a different feel to the exhibition. We are already planning a new outside area for our BBQ members, enabling them to light up their grills and show off their cooking skills.
We look forward to welcoming you back in person in 2022 but in the meantime, hop on to our website between the 6-8July and immerse yourself in SOLEX 2021.

The Bowl can be used at two different heights with a low wirebase or a high tripod. The enamelled steel Bowl, with its beautiful hemispherical shape, can be placed upright or tilted to reflect the heat and shield you from smoke. It turns into an ideal cooking and grilling zone when you add the grid and plancha.
The removable interior brazier protects the ground from too much heat and enables just the right amount of oxygen supply to the fire.
The Triple is a tribute to the open fireplace. Made from Corten Steel the fire bowl series comes in three sizes, 65, 90 and 120. Made in three segments, each piece is identically designed, facetted and fits together perfectly to form one solid beautiful fireplace. This makes it easily transportable and can be moved anywhere you need an open fireplace. It comes with two ingenious additions , a cooking grate and a hot plate, which are both pivotable and rotatable allowing you to whip up some tasty treats as well as keeping warm as the sun sets.
Beach, garden, park or countryside, wherever you go this summer make the Cube your constant companion. By day is can be used as a handy seat or table and by night add a few logs and you have yourself a warm and cosy fire to sit around, add a grill or plancha and you have yourself a barbecue. Totally transportable and great for those who love to travel, camp or just love a fire. It takes a multi-purpose to a whole new level!
The Cube also has an ingenious design quirk that makes extinguishing the fire as simple as 1,2,3. You just turn it upside down, and the fire bowl, which is suspended within the Cube, tilts and the fire is out.

LifestyleGarden®is using SOLEX 2021 to showcase its new-for-2022 collection of garden furniture made from ethically-recovered plastic that helps fight ocean pollution by improving the lives of those who collect it...
LifestyleGarden® is showcasing its new-for-2022 Nassau Social Plastic® Collection - exclusively designed in partnership with Plastic Bank® at SOLEX 2021.
The new range consisting of rainbow-bright mix and match chairs, bistro, and dining sets, is made exclusively from Social Plastic® - ethically-recovered plastic that helps fight ocean pollution by improving the lives of those who collect it.
Back in 2019, LifestyleGarden® shook up the outdoor furniture market with the launch of its DuraOcean® chair. Made from 3.5kgs of recycled maritime waste including nets and rope, the DuraOcean® scooped the SOLEX Best New Product award and generated an important and much-needed conversation around our reliance on plastic and the impact plastic waste has on our planet. At SOLEX 2021, LifestyleGarden® returns to the exhibition with the exciting next chapter for responsible material innovation – Social Plastic®.
Plastic Bank builds ethical recycling ecosystems in vulnerable coastal communities and reprocesses the materials for reintroduction into the global manufacturing supply chain. The company empowers disadvantaged communities and helps them to transcend inequality by providing an opportunity to collect and monetize plastic waste.
Collectors in Plastic Bank’s ecosystems receive a premium for the materials they collect, which helps them provide basic family necessities such as groceries, school tuition, internet access, health insurance, and cooking fuel. The collected plastic waste is washed, flaked, and goes through a recycling process, where they are then pelletized and integrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. It is these pellets that LifestyleGarden® will now use exclusively for its Nassau Social Plastic® Collection.
Paul Cohen, Sales Director at LifestyleGarden®said: “Our company-wide motto has always been ‘Doing Business the Right Way” and this has been ingrained in all that we do. Our new Social Plastic® offering, however, feels the culmination of everything we have worked towards. The positive impact of this material innovation has not been seen before within our industry and we strongly believe that it will change the way that people shop as they look to support brands that showcase visibility regarding their impact and supply chain. Social responsibility has never been so prominent, and we are dedicated to playing our part with Social Plastic® being the start of our story.”
Every Nassau chair will be made from the equivalent of 175 recycled plastic bottles, with each chair directly contributing to communities in locations such as the Philippines, Indonesia, and Haiti. Recognizing the popularity of this range and the value that Social Plastic®will have within the retail setting, LifestyleGarden® has set a target of FIVE million plastic bottles to be recycled through its Social Plastic®range in 2022.
Using Plastic Bank’s Alchemy™ blockchain platform which secures the entire transaction and provides real-time data visualization, LifestyleGarden® is able to track the lifecycle of every Social Plastic® product. This information can be shared with its retail customers and consumers to help paint a detailed picture of the plastic crisis and how little steps can make a huge difference to vulnerable communities as well as the planet. From the names of the collectors, to how their lives have changed as a result of their work with Plastic Bank, this is material with a real soul and the ability to change lives.

Together with the launch of their simplified brand, the team at Maze has been expanding to deliver growth and support for their trade partners too.
Maze commented: "We’re investing further in our team and processes to deliver growth opportunities for our valued trade partners. We’ve welcomed new starters into our account management, trade customer services and national account teams to enhance our support and offer a service to be proud of."
The new starters join a fantastic existing team who hold a wealth of outdoor living experience, and bring some new perspectives to the business.
Alongside the growth of the head office teams Maze has invested in additional distribution capability with a new 80,000 sq ft northern distribution hub to complement their existing warehousing and operations capacity.

Picture the scene – it’s 2019 and the judges are about to deliver their verdict on the SOLEX Best New Product award. Several products are vying for the title but only one brand - LifestyleGarden® - was able to walk away with the accolade. Little did anyone know just how this award would help to kickstart its recycled maritime plastic range, DuraOcean®, into the mainstream. Here the team tells us more about the amazing journey DuraOcean® has been on.
DuraOcean® came to market at exactly the right time, when reducing plastics was at the top of both the trade and consumer agenda. Following the airing of Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II programme, interest in environmental issues has increased amongst consumers as well as their expectations of businesses as responsible suppliers. Organisations and research were also starting to truly highlight the impact plastic waste was having upon the environment, with statistics outlining some terrifying realities such as the annual global production of plastic waste stood at 300 million tonnes, with eight million tonnes ending up in the world’s oceans, polluting the water and killing more than 100,000 marine creatures. We were also being warned that by 2050 there may be more plastic in our oceans than fish.
The result of two years’ extensive research and development and a multi-million-pound investment from LifestyleGarden®’s parent company, ScanCom International, DuraOcean® has resonated with shoppers who are increasingly demanding ethical and sustainable furniture but will not compromise on style or comfort, while demanding a bold, stand-out design. Each chair is made from 3.5kgs of recycled ropes from the maritime industry, and to date the chair has helped to recycle over 204,000kgs (240 tonnes) of ocean plastic, a journey that continues with consumers following along via LifestyleGarden®’s website and social media channels.
The conscious decision to offer sets in different price ranges , also sent a clear message – sustainability should not be unaffordable. These price points ensured that all consumer demographics could purchase DuraOcean® for their homes, gardens and balconies and, in doing so, can help to spread the word to friends and family far and wide.
The DuraOcean® collection has also enabled retailers to fly the flag for sustainable material and products, helping to highlight to their customers their commitment to environmental protection. This has, in turn, paid dividends, by creating an army of loyal customers who keep coming back for more as the strong environmental message resonates long-term. To-date, DuraOcean® is stocked in many UK garden centres, furniture retailers, as well as in France, Spain, Switzerland, USA and Singapore. LifestyleGarden® has also proudly partnered with Robert Dyas, as exclusive high street retailers of DuraOcean®.
DuraOcean® has also been entered into a number of prestigious awards, including the Design Week Awards, National Recycling Awards, DIY Week Awards, and new relationships with the likes of the RHS shows, garden designers, BBC Gardeners’ World, The Wildlife Trust, and Keep Britain Tidy to name but a few have been forged.
Since its launch, DuraOcean® has received an incredible response from the media. From garden and home consumer titles, to national newspapers, architect and interior design media, publications focused on sustainability, coastal living, and the natural world, DuraOcean® has featured in thousands of magazines and online blogs, websites and social media post. Together this media coverage has reached in excess of 465 million people, or 465 million possible DuraOcean® customers and advocates.
In addition to the media support, DuraOcean® has been strongly supported by the incredible educational and global garden, the Eden Project. This exclusive partnership saw the DuraOcean® take centre stage within Eden’s Mediterranean biome, highlighting the horrific extent of plastic waste that washes-up on beaches every year, as well as the story behind its journey from polluting sea plastic to stylish garden furniture. This feature helped to put the DuraOcean® in front of thousands of potential customers, revving up consumer engagement with the product offering.
The CEO of Eden Project International, David Harland, spoke about the journey which saw the landmark Cornish visitor attraction, which attracts almost 1.1million visitors per year, partner with Scancom, a global manufacturer of sustainable outdoor furniture and a company that has the motto ‘Doing Business the Right Way’ at its core. David said: “We’re incredibly careful about partners we select. What we loved about Scancom is how its ethos broadly fitted with ours. Secondly, Scancom came to us with something that was innovative. At Eden we have always tried to be innovative. Thirdly, examples of beauty are part of the human condition, and ultimately this furniture is beautiful. Scancom ticked all the boxes and we hope to do great things together. This is just the beginning!”
In the run-up to the marriage between the two brands, Eden scrutinised Scancom for criteria including sustainability, human rights and social responsibility. David added: “We liked Scancom’s commitment to doing things right and thinking in the long-term.”
And long-term they do think. The original dark green DuraOcean® has just been the start of the journey. 2020 saw the material innovation introduced into LifestyleGarden®’s all-new Panama collection. This low maintenance, aluminum range which enjoys expansive configurations and chair designs, boasts a special DuraOcean® high-backed, stackable chair in stylish and contemporary black, whilst a new mint green DuraOcean® is set for launch ahead of the 2022 season. The ability to incorporate the unique material innovation into different ranges was always the lasting aim, and the latest developments have taken this one step further.
Social Plastic® is an exciting next step in the wider journey LifestyleGarden ® is undertaking. Social Plastic® refers to ethically recovered plastic that helps fight ocean pollution by improving the lives of those who collect it. Working in partnership with the Plastic Bank® organisation, collectors in Plastic Bank’s® ecosystems receive a premium for the materials they collect, which helps them provide basic family necessities such as groceries, school tuition, internet access, health insurance, and cooking fuel. The collected plastic waste is washed, flaked, and goes through a recycling process, where they are then pelletised and integrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. It is these pellets that LifestyleGarden® will now use exclusively for its Nassau Social Plastic® Collection – a stunning collection of rainbow-coloured chairs.
With this incredible new partnership, the future certainly looks bright for DuraOcean® and LifestyleGarden®’s mission to make all its outdoor furniture from sustainable material; material designed to protect the world around us. There is no doubt that the efforts the team is undertaking will continue to deliver results both regarding sales and changing consumers’ minds about premium products made from ocean plastic waste. So why not join the team on the journey – it’s going to be worth it!
