"What a year! It began with fears of not knowing whether or not garden centres would be allowed to open, and what they would or would not be able to sell in stores.
"It now seems a long time ago that we had these worries as our members and the stores they supply have nearly all sold out of stock, which is a brilliant result for a year where there has been so much uncertainty.
"However, it is still not plain sailing, many companies are still furloughing staff and having to figure out new ways of working and showcasing their products.
"We decided to cancel Solex in March as we knew that this year was going to be a challenge for everyone within the industry. We put the safety and wellbeing of our staff, exhibitors, visitors, partners and contractors first.
"So, with no Solex our next thoughts were how do we get the fabulous range of 2021 Leisure and Outdoor products in front of our Solex visitors?
"Easy, we decided to link up with the guys from GTN and use the magic of the internet to bring you the digital version of the Solex Exhibition 2020.
"So, it’s business as usual for the the Solex Sun which normally runs across the three days of the Solex Show but this year we will be running across the whole week, 6-10 July.

In a way that's no surprise given the need for all retailers to re-stock after record breaking sales in 2020, but good news that the SOLEX SUN and the interactive SOLEX website are between them meeting the needs of buyers across the UK when it comes to looking at products for next year.

Hartman has launched its new virtual 3D showroom, enabling all clients to view its 2021 collection during these uncertain times.
The unpredictability of this season has resulted in all companies adapting to new strategies in order to reach out to customers. With the unfortunate news of Solex being cancelled this year, Hartman wanted to give centres the opportunity to view the range, even if the nation was still in restrictive lockdown measures.
The virtual technology enables customers to navigate around the showroom, using similar functionality to that of Google Maps. Clients can walk around the furniture as if they were there in person and digest useful information about each set using the furniture hot-spots.
This innovative virtual tour also acts as a fantastic post-appointment reference tool for guests that have visited the showroom and wants a quick reminder of the collections.

Everyone has been consuming Social Media in large quantities during lock, down so Gina at LOFA HQ thought it might a good idea to jump on the band wagon and run a Summer competition.
"I reached out to our lovely LOFA members who donated some rather fabulous prizes for our six week LOFA LOVE SUMMER COMPETITION," Gina told The SOLEX SUN.
"On the 22nd June we kicked off the competition with a Travel Kadai from Kadai, next a drinks trolley from Norfolk Leisure, then a 24 Piece Stainless Steel BBQ set from Lifestyle Appliances, next week will be the Smoke Fire EX4 GBS Wood Fired Pellet Grill from Weber, and then a Prestige furniture cover from Tom Chambers and finally a Rock audio speaker from Lithe Audio.
"We are offering one prize a week and so far so good, our average growth on social media had gone up by 2853% across Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram which is great news and allows LOFA to interact directly with the consumer, which means when we go ahead with our future consumer campaigns it will mean more people will engage with us."

A social media campaign was launched by Supremo Ltd during lockdown to give back to the UK’s key workers, with a garden furniture giveaway worth over £10k.
One of the UK’s premium wholesale garden furniture supplier, watched sales boom due to the unseasonal heat we experienced whilst in isolation. Online retailers were selling out fast, making it difficult for the general public to purchase any garden supplies whilst staying safe at home let alone the workers on the frontline.
The Telford based distributor, provided the opportunity to win highly desirable garden furniture from large dining to deep cushioned lounge sets. Two months into lockdown, Supremo followers were asked to help through social media accounts by nominating a key worker in need of a place to relax.
Managing director, Julian Windsor, planned the £10K giveaway to celebrate those working hard to keep the UK going and wanted to ensure they were given the opportunity to win a commodity that would benefit them and their families. ‘It was about making sure some of our frontline workers had a place where they could relax once home with their families,’ said the owner who has been in the industry for over 30 years. ‘There was a lot of public love for our key workers but by asking the individuals to nominate the appreciation became personal.’
‘Supremo Ltd wanted to highlight the amazing things people are doing and what they are going through in order for the UK to stay safe.’
‘I have been absolutely delighted by the response with over 1000 comments and likes across our social media pages. It has been really uplifting.’
Supremo Ltd gave away four sets over a week worth over £10K in retail value. Four lucky winners were picked at random and came from across the UK.
Among the winners were Sam and Tori from Birmingham (above) who both work for the NHS, and during lockdown Sam hadn’t seen his two young boys for over 3-months and Aimee (top picture) who works as a health care assistant in the Stroke Ward, had to self-isolate from her family for 14-days at the start of the pandemic.
‘I was completely overwhelmed by the nomination and I never thought I would win,’ said Aimee.
‘It never crossed my mind that what I was doing was worth the acknowledgment, for me it was my duty to keep going for my patients.’
Normally, Aimee and her husband, Matt work alternative shifts to ensure they have childcare and get very little time together.
‘Winning this set means we have a place to go and relax as a family. Quality time means the world to us and is very precious. We can’t thank Supremo enough,’ explained Aimee.

While social distancing, hand sanitisation and in some cases face coverings have rapidly become the norm, one factor that was shaping consumer demand long before the pandemic continues to gain momentum: environmentally responsible shopping...
The Covid-19 pandemic has shaken the world of retail to its core. While social distancing, hand sanitisation and in some cases face coverings have rapidly become the norm, one factor that was shaping consumer demand long before the pandemic continues to gain momentum: environmentally responsible shopping.
Lockdown revealed how quickly the planet can begin to recover from human activity, and that’s set to have a significant impact on consumers’ buying decisions as society attempts to emerge into the much talked about ‘new normal’. Shoppers were increasingly eco-savvy pre-Covid; now consumers can spot greenwash from a mile away and will naturally scrutinize products prior to purchase to examine their environmental credentials.
What’s driving this change in mindset? Before to the pandemic, Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II series, which highlighted the devastating impact of plastic waste on the world’s oceans, and teenage activist Greta Thunberg’s Climate Strikes, gave rise to a new global movement that brought environmental activism to the masses and demanded genuine change. While the pandemic has resulted in human tragedy, it has brought environmental recovery on a scale that previously would have appeared unimaginable in our lifetime.
Take air pollution, for example. In Europe alone, it’s estimated that 11,000 deaths have been avoided when lockdown saw demand for oil and coal consumption plummet. According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, measures to slow the spread of coronavirus resulted in a 40% reduction in nitrogen dioxide pollution and a 10% fall in particulate matter pollution. Immediate health benefits, the study claims, include 1.3million fewer days of work absence, 6,000 fewer cases of asthma in children and 1,900 avoided emergency visits to hospital due to asthma attacks.
Plus, the global shutdown of passenger travel – in particular aviation – is predicted to lead to a record 5% fall in global carbon emissions from fossil fuels, equating to 2.5billion tonnes of carbon. During lockdown in London, according to the BBC, traffic levels fell back to those not experienced since the early 1970s, to around 35% of the normal level, further enhancing air quality. In China, where Covid-19 originated, carbon emissions fell by around 25% at the start of the year, when strict lockdown was enforced, while a report in the Evening Standard claimed that citizens in northern India saw the view of the Himalayan mountains for the first time in their lives, due to the sudden drop in air pollution. And in one of the most memorable stories to arise as a result of the pandemic, Venice’s famous canals appeared to be clearer, as boat traffic serving tourists ground to a standstill. Footage from the European Space Agency has revealed astonishing drops in air pollution as the atmosphere started to clear.
While there is no doubt that lockdown had a profound impact on reducing air pollution, global turmoil arising from Covid-19 will have little effect on one of the most pressing environmental concerns of our generation – the horrifying volume of plastic waste that’s suffocating marine life in the world’s oceans. Around 300 million tonnes of plastic waste is created globally every year, with eight million tonnes ending up in the world’s oceans, polluting the water and killing more than 100,000 marine creatures. With shoppers around the world buying one million plastic drinking bottles every minute – a figure that’s predicted to jump by another 20% by 2021, it is feared that by 2050, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish.

The global coronavirus situation has posed huge challenges to suppliers and retailers alike, but garden furniture and giftware supplier Ascalon Design Ltd have taken the crisis in their stride. With unprecedented sales throughout June, their teams have risen to the challenge of supplying customers under the new operating conditions created by the pandemic.
With the warehouse team adapting quickly to working safely with social distancing measures in place, they’ve spent the last few weeks busily shipping orders of desperately needed stock out to help customers looking to quickly reopen shops and garden centres and get their year back on track. Despite the challenges, lead-times remain low, equalling other busy periods in the year.
Meanwhile, sales and accounts teams continue to remain fully functional whilst working from home, ensuring orders are processed promptly and supporting customers with queries. Regional reps are back on the road, ready to help customers select the stock they need from Ascalon’s wide ranges. Extreme Lounging's Joe Shrimpton has been speaking to the SOLEX SUN about the 2020 Season. "For such a "strange" year we are up on sales targets from last year, with the thriving outdoor leisure sector.
"We have been able to react quickly being a UK manufacture and support all Garden Centres and Outdoor Centres we deal with.
"The rate of sales has been incredible and has certainly created a domino effect with our brand and products, word of mouth through end consumer has certainly played a key roll.
"Each product has excelled but our new outdoor lamps and hammocks seem top be the products to have, selling 2 months worth of stock in 2 weeks, its been challenging to replace stocks but we have been prepared as much as we can, certain lines have out-forecasted themselves by nearly 300 percent.
"Going forward and looking towards 2021 we have a new product ready to launch in the coming weeks, finding new ways to create a virtual tour of our showroom giving buyers an insight into our brand and new products, so watch this space.
"As a whole we certainly feel that we have made huge progress this season in the outdoor living sector, with brand presence and product awareness and it has been very apparent that being a UK manufacture has had its huge positives, being able to react quickly and support demanding sales, we see this been a very good selling point for future seasons."

The birth of Firepits UK
It all began in 2008 when our eldest son was having a party at home for a group of his school friends. We were hoping for a warm summer’s evening so they could enjoy the freedom of the garden – and we could enjoy some peace inside. However, as so often happens, the fickle British weather was forecast to let us down.
Tim thought a fire pit could be the answer. First he looked around to see if we could buy one. When he couldn’t find what we needed he asked our friends if they could help but no one could. So, ever practical, he made one. And it proved to be a great success. The kids loved it, partied into the early hours and, rather than stay inside, we wanted to be outside with them, enjoying the warmth and light of the fire too.
Word soon spread. At first our friends asked to borrow the fire pit but before long asked Tim if he’d make them one. Next people offered to buy one and very quickly we were offered the chance to sell them on a larger scale at a polo event in Gloucestershire. From here Firepits UK was born.
Our children have long since left home, but Firepits UK remains. We’re proud to be part of our local community here in beautiful rural Wales. And we’re proud that we’re keeping alive the age-old tradition of crafting with metal.
Traditional, natural and kind to the environment
In these unprecedented times we are particularly proud of our truly British made fire pits, pizza ovens and outdoor kitchens that are handmade at our workshop by skilled, local craftsmen. We only use high-grade, thick (at least 3mm) British steel. And we use construction methods that mean they’ll last for years.
Because we want to save resources and help protect the environment we don’t coat or treat the metal we use, other than a quick lick of oil before it leaves the workshop. We also use as little packaging as possible. So smaller items will come in a box but larger items will have no packaging at all.
We design all our products so you can use and store them outside. The thick steel we use means they’ll withstand all weathers, the heat from the fire and will last for more than ten years. Any rust they develop is simply a natural part of the ageing process and is nothing to worry about. In fact, it’s part of what gives each fire pit, pizza oven or outdoor kitchen its unique beauty.

Starting a business is difficult at the best of times but starting a business just as Coronavirus hits is a whole new experience!
Ginique Ltd was launched by John Hinde in January 2020, the future was looking bright, all ready to launch his new product range at SOLEX as well as hitting the road and visiting garden centres across the UK. However, this was not to be and since lockdown the period of transition that we have gone through has been staggering, the world currently looks a very different place from all aspects of business, social distancing being uppermost in most people’s minds.
Never one to shy away from a challenge John decided to use his virtual skills to launch his new product range via a series of informative videos via You Tube, specifically for buyers, showcasing the products at their very best. “Having never done this before I was right out of my comfort zone but as I know a lot of centres are very busy at the moment and may not want to have face to face appointments this year I thought I would embrace the medium and give it a go.”
From his home in Shropshire John has produced 1 short video per product for the new Höfats range.
Höfats products are unique in design and since 2015 when the company began have received no less that 54 prestigious international design awards Red Dot Design Awards, European Design Awards, Innovative Interior Awards to name but a few.

We have typically seen a rise in furniture, heating and barbecue buying, but we predict these areas will now be further embellished with ornamental pieces as our gardens come into full bloom and we begin to complete garden projects and relax into new spaces we have created.

With little to do, and the Summer Holidays fast approaching, we are set to be picnic-ing outdoors to enjoy the sunny weather, experience new pastures, and to most importantly spend time with our loved ones. COVID Premier Update
We are busy working behind the scenes to ensure the safety of our employees and customers - we have added to the sanitation stations which start from entering our reception and set up screens between desks, introduced one-way systems in our offices, Our warehouse has been operating on skeleton staff to ensure maximum social distancing and protective PPE equipment installed similar to that in our head office. During lockdown we have been busy processing orders and answering customer queries while developing our new range from the safety of our homes under government guidelines, and will continue to do so before we believe it's appropriate and safe to change our stance on the matter. The Covers are manufactured from a heavy duty polyester fabric with a PVC free backing and have a Rainguard TM weather repellent, weather proof coating ensuring year-round protection against all the elements.

Our range of handcrafted garden furniture is all made at our factory in Yorkshire by our experienced craftsmen.
Improved curved seats on the front section of the collection gives a more relaxed seating position, coupled with the high backrest all items in the range are supportive and comfortable and have a quality feel.
All items from the range come flat packed for easy transportation and have clear instructions of how to assemble inside each pack, heavy duty coach bolts are supplied to ensure each piece of furniture is robust when built.
