The Sun shines and SOLEX attendance beats last year
2013-07-09 11.33.57.jpg
With only 1 day remaining, SOLEX visitor numbers have been up on both days of the show so far...

2013-07-09 11.33.57.jpg
SOLEX Show Organiser Phil Gibbs reports that attendance on the first day of SOLEX 2013 was up by 10% and today, Tuesday, visitor numbers increased by over 20% on last year.

"We're particularly pleased that 6 times more people have come back for a second day this year.  It just goes to show how much there is to see in Hall 5 of the NEC."

Visitors have commented to the GTN team that it's been great for all of the show to be in one Hall, making buying decisons that much easier.  And plenty of orders are being placed at the show.  One garden centre owner told the SOLEX SUN: "We made a full day of it yesterday and got all of our buying for next season sorted in one go. Fantastic."

SOLEX 2013 is open for it's final day tomorrow, Wednesday 10th July, from 9am until 5pm.

SOLEX 2014 will be back at the NEC from Monday 7th July through to Wednesday 9th July 2014.

Dennis Espley, managing director of the Squires garden centre group, echoed the palpable relief felt by many other visiting buyers at SOLEX on the the return of “proper summer weather” over recent weeks.

The re-appearance of the sun and temperatures in the respectable 20s has stimulated a late surged in outdoor leisure sales across most UYK garden centres.

In barbecues, it’s the mid-range product that are selling bnest, Dennis said. “We’re doing very well now with £300-£400 barbecues,” he told SOLEX SUN. “People are looking for something that lasts and represents better value.”

Norfolk Leisure today presented a cheque for £500 to Stratford Garden Centre, winners of a competition to find the best retail display promoting the company’s all-weather furniture fabrics, which you can see on stand 215.

The contest was keenly fought by dozens of Norfolk’s stockists across the UK and was judged by LOFA Secretary Phil Gibbs, who said Stratford’s display struck the ideal balance between eye-catching quirkiness and useful information.

Premier Decorations are the new UK distributors for the Barbecook range of barbecues...and they're offering buyers a freebie...

Barbecook are also exhibiting at SOLEX in their own right, because the new agreement was signed close to the opening of the show, leaving little time to alter the arrangements.

“Barbecook is helping us to complete the circle ,” said Premier’s Pravin Patel. “We now offer a portfolio of brands that make up a serious barbecue offer.” Other brands distributed by Premier include Sunday chimeneas and built-ins, the Char Grillers range and Jack Daniels barbecue fuels.

Buyers visiting the stand will learn how they can earn a free Barbecook barbecue, simply by registering their interest in the range on the Premier website. “We have such confidence that the Barbecue brand will work for us that we’re prepared to be generous!” said Pravin (pictured).

Alexander Rose are looking forward to Christmas...
Alexander Rose’s appearance at this year’s SOLEX (stand 220) doubles as a 20th anniversary celebration...but they're already looking forward to Christmas...

Alexander Rose MD Borge Leth and GTN publisher Pat Flynn astride the giant reindeer that will end up as a fabulous prize in January.

Alexander Rose’s appearance at this year’s SOLEX (stand 220) doubles as a celebration of their 20th anniversary.

As well as a range they regard as one of the industry’s most comprehensive, embracing all materials and styles from the traditional to the contemporary, a giant reindeer on the stand is something of a show landmark. Created in the same resin weave featured in their top of the range furniture, it is being marketed to garden centres for their Christmas displays. With a trade price tag of £1,800, it’s retail price ticket would be well over £3,000 – but its main appeal will be as a show-stopper for Christmas departments.

Alexander Rose agreed today to donate a reindeer for a charity prize draw at GTN’s Greatest Christmas Awards party in Harrogate next January. Watch out for full details in Garden Trade News over the next few months – and in the weekly GTN Xtra email newsletter.

Buyers get carried away with Best New Product of the Show

CPL Distribution, famous for their winter fuels, have been astounded by the reaction to their Supagrill Pod Kettle BBQ's that won the coveted Best New Product of the Show award.

Under the Supagrill brand, CPL Distribution won the Best New Product award with their innovative Pod Kettle Barbecue. Created from heat proof and water resistant material, this barbeque allows the user to enjoy the beauty and strength of shaped ceramic stone without struggling with the weight.

Independent judge Jackie Norton, programme director for3D design at Birmingham City University, said the Pod Kettle Barbecue really stood out and she was impressed by the depth of knowledge from the CPL team.

"This is a really innovative product, and it works on so many levels," added Jackie.

Chris Foy, from CPL Distribution, admitted to being shocked at winning the award.

"We were hopeful when the judge came over but couldn't have expected the outcome because there are so many good products at the show. It's exciting and really good news, especially as this is our first SOLEX."

Buyers looking for barbecues that offer something different will welcome the stylish new Thuros models from Germany...

Buyers looking for barbecues that offer something different will welcome the stylish new German-made Thuros range from new SOLEX exhibitors Roke (stand E6).

Supplied with a 10-year guarantee, there are tabletop and free-standing models, all in quality stainless steel. A retail POS display unit also gives retailers the opportunities for add-on sales of accessories and tools.

“We think buyers will appreciate the fact that these are a bit different to the norm,” said Roke’s Kirk Fletcher.

The tabletop model is designed to keep heat well away from the working surface.

Roke also have range of Jim Beam charcoal – and wood chips made from that brand's disused barrels. Mmmm...lovely flavouring.

Timber regulations: how to stay out of jail..
SOLEX organisers LOFA are helping members and their customers to stay on the right side of new laws governing timber products...and stay out of jail...

LOFA's environmental specialist works on the new work plan for members.

SOLEX organisers LOFA are reminding members and their customers of new EU regulations governing the sale and supply of timber products that came into force on 3 March this year. Non-compliance could result in a jail sentence.

Under the new statute, designed to reduce the amount of illegally-harvested timber reaching the market and protect global rain forests, suppliers must be able to demonstrate that all timber in their products comes from a legal source. The statute applies to retailers who import directly from the factory as well as manufacturers and importers.

The regulations are being enforced by Defra through the National Measurement Office (NMO), whose officers are empowered to enter the premises of suppliers and request documentary evidence of provenance. An initial remedial order can be made, with fines and jail sentences in the event of continued failure to comply.

Steve Hallam, LOFA’s environmental specialist, who has played a key role in the development of LOFA’s Made Aware scheme, said: “This is not a voluntary code, it has the force of law.”

LOFA members have been fully briefed about the new regulations and been provided with a work plan outlining the required procedures. Retailers who are concerned how they might be affected can request further information from the LOFA office.

Paul Bevington, the chairman of LOFA, has offered a warm welcome to exhibitors and visitors for this year's SOLEX taking place at the NEC...

"When we first contemplated a move to the NEC we had our sights set on Hall 4. That would have given us more space than we had at Telford and would have been a big step forward.

"However, the success of SOLEX continues unabated and it soon became apparent that we would fill Hall 4, necessitating a move into today’s location, Hall 5.

"The result: you’ll find even more exhibitors, 16% more and, I am sure, lots of new ideas to inspire you for 2014!

"The success of our industry can only be secured by suppliers and customers working in close partnership. SOLEX was founded to stimulate and promote a spirit of co-operation and it really is ‘the relaxed way to do business’.

"On behalf of all the exhibitors and the organising team, enjoy your time at SOLEX 2013."
